About the instructor
Peter Marks
Peter has been developing software for over 30 years. As an active member of the OO community, he was a regular speaker at the OT and SPA conferences. In 1999, he co-founded Connextra, pioneering many of today's main-stream Agile practices. For ten years, Peter's primary interest has been functional programming, and he now leads the FPF team at Barclays, developing languages for modelling Structured Products, and tools for pricing and managing trades, in Haskell. He is also a maker, hacker and volunteer, ensuring the local community don't set themselves on fire when working on projects at the lab.

This eight week course will introduce the fundamental concepts and building blocks of electronics. Rather than study theory, we aim to develop an intuition about how components and circuits work. Through a series of problem solving tasks, participants will learn to select and connect parts to achieve desired results, and will design and build increasingly complex devices.

The course is entirely practical based and the course fee includes a kit containing all the parts needed, which participants can keep and take home. We assume no prior knowledge of electronics, and look to build the skills and knowledge foundation needed to undertake basic electronics projects and to underpin further learning and exploration.

On successfully completing the course, participants should be able to:

  • Design and build some simple electronic circuits achieving some desired behaviour
  • Understand some existing circuits and modify them to suit different needs
  • Track down problems in simple circuits
  • Have a solid foundation to learn more as needed
  • Be confident and inspired to explore and experiment safely

Participants must have:

  • Basic maths including arithmetic and using a calculator
  • Problem solving skills
  • An inquisitive mind

The fee for the course is £95, which includes an electronics kit to use in the sessions and to take home. You will also need a multimeter. If you do not have one, we can supply one at a cost of £15.

Under 14's welcome if accompanied by a participating adult but the content is pitched to ages 16+
